Here’s an adulting conundrum:
You’re an adult, which means you’re most likely tired, achy, overwhelmed and stressed out. You want to start taking steps to feel better but you feel like you don’t have another minute to spare. So what do you do?
I’m with you. We’re all with you. All that means is it’s time to start small.
Here’s one simple step you can take to feel better each day that requires less than a minute.
Make your bed every morning.
I don’t mean to sound like your Mom here, so just bear with me. Making your bed is just the kind of small step that can begin your adulting recovery and here’s why:
One: It Sets The Tone For The Day
Love this quote from a Navy Admiral “If you make your bed every morning you will have accomplished the first task of the day.”
I don’t know about you but mornings are rough for me. But making my bed first thing, as stupid as it sounds, feels like I’m telling myself and the world that I’m going to get shit done starting…now.
Two: It Sets The Tone For The Evening
Ahhhh, is there anything more delightful than coming home to a welcoming bed?
No, no there is not. It seems so teeny tiny, but having my bed made when I get back makes me feel better. And apparently it’s not just me. It’s science. In a 2010 study, “women who described their living spaces as ‘cluttered’…were more likely to be depressed and fatigued than women who described their homes as ‘restful’ and ‘restorative.’ ”
Three: It’s Doable
If it takes you more than 30 seconds to make your bed, then there are some bigger issues that need to be discussed. And 30 seconds is generous.
Whether you’re late or cranky or hungover, no matter what you tell yourself, you have 30 seconds to make your bed. You do!
This is especially important for those of us who suffer from depression. When it hits, sometimes simply opening your eyes can be a Herculean effort. This is a great quote from a bi-polar author, “When I’m depressed, it’s critical I choose goals I will likely reach. Otherwise, my quark-sized spark of motivation will kaput.” Yaaaaaas.
When you’re depressed you have to think REALLY SMALL. And guess what’s small? Making your bed. Maybe that’s the goal for the entire day. “Today, I will get up and make my bed.” That’s it. That might be all you get done in which case, you should applaud yourself for being a rockstar and making it happen. Or, maybe, you’ll feel just a little bit better each day until you feel like you can come up with another bed-making sized goal you can accomplish.
